New Year’s Resolution: Keep Quiet About Goals

January. This is the time when we warm our bones with goals of turning our lives around. We publicly pledge to better ourselves all across social media. And we join the hordes of new gym members chasing after their New Year’s resolutions.

In this tell-all age of social media, we’re forgetting an important lesson about goals: It’s better to keep them to ourselves. Of course, though, Facebook and Twitter compel us to be more open about what’s going on in our lives though.

In this fascinating TED Talk, Derek Sivers explains why it’s best to stay silent about our resolutions. He presents research dating all the way back to the Roaring Twenties that shows why people who talk about their ambitions may be less likely to achieve them.
