More HD channels coming for some in Indy

1020_BHN_blogMore than 35 new HD channels are going to be available on the Bright House Networks cable system by the end of the year. Company president Buz Nesbit said its the first push by Bright House to bulk up its HD lineup on the way to providing 100 new HD channels by early 2010. Most of the new HD channels will be available to Bright House digital subscribers at no charge.

Bright House is also getting ready to launch Start Over, a feature that lets viewers retart, pause and rewind certain shows if they tune to that show at any time — basically, it lets you go back and catch the beginning of a show you missed.

Indianapolis Colts’ new sponsor: Bright House Networks

The Indianapolis Colts landed a new sponsor this week: Bright House Networks. During the 2009-10 season, Bright House plans to schedule three central Indiana elementary school convocations that will feature Colts mascot Blue and some player appearances. Details of the sponsorship are on Indystar.com.

The company is also teaming up with the Art Institute of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Public Schools and the Penrod Society to create the Legacy Art Initiative to benefit the arts culture of Indianapolis and provide opportunities in the arts for Indianapolis students. In the first phase of the Legacy Art Initiative, IPS students in grades kindergarten through 12 created canvas art that will be displayed in Lucas Oil Stadium this season. Bright House will also be sponsoring Colts mascot Blue’s appearance in October’s Circle City Classic Parade.

Avon resident wins big with his funny video clip

0911_BHNAvon’s Chris Kimbro is a lucky guy. One night he was watching TV when a commercial caught his eye. A national contest sought video entries that show how people today watch TV on the most dated, vintage and unbelievable old TVs there are out there. He grabbed his dad’s old portable TV, one of the first ones ever made, propped it up on his family room coffee table and with his wife and their dogs recorded a quick clip to send in to the contest.

“Here we are on a Friday night, huddled up on our living room floor with our dogs, watching our four-inch Sony Watchman TV,” Kimbro says in the video as his wife holds up a magnifying glass to the pint-size video device. “It’s got the long antenna and everything. Since the digital switchover, we don’t get any channels. The closest one we can get is Ch. 8. It’s a little bit fuzzy but we’ve got the magnifying glass to make it look real nice.”

For his short, 30-second clip poking fun at outdated technology, Kimbro won a 52-inch Sony Bravia S-series LCD HDTV, a year’s worth of free Bright House Networks digital cable service and a high-definition DVR. His total prize package carries a retail value of $3,500.

You can watch Kimbro’s winning clip from Bright House Networks’ “Help! I’m stuck in the 21st Century” contest at http://tinyurl.com/l82rkt.

One event is being held in the parking lot of the Marion County Health Department at 3838 North Rural Street. Parents can take advantage of free glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings offered at the event through a partnership between MHS and Ivy Tech Community College.

At both events, MHS mascot RosieRoo will be present giving high fives and encouraging children to live active, healthy lives. Check out more about RosieRoo and other “Just for Kids” cool things on the MHS Web site.
